The Purge – Season Finale

The Purge Season 1 finale had me on the edge of my seat and excited.  Yes, I said excited and yes, I said SEASON 1.  Because that’s right – The Purge has already been renewed for Season 2!

But that’s not why I’m here – I’m here to talk about the Season 1 Finale and where all of our favorite characters ended up.

Season 1 wraps up with 2 main stories happening simultaneously.  Joe, having kidnapped all the people who have “wronged” him putting them on trial and Miguel and Pete the Cop trying to get to Joe and said people to save Penelope.   The episode starts with Rick and Jenna hitting Joe’s trial chairs.  The more the information comes out, the more it does seem Rick is an asshole who screwed Joe over on some Purge installs.  Joe, who we’ve seen with some of his (ir)rationale, is a bit over the top – so although Rick is an ass, killing him might not be the most reasonable.  But we’re here and Joe gives an ultimatum.  Jenna can kill Rick and survive herself.  Rick says do it – trying to protect Jenna and their unborn baby girl.  Jenna does decide to pull the trigger, but the gun isn’t loaded – silly Jenna.  Joe’s dumb – but not that dumb!

Miguel and Pete show up, closely followed by the Carnival guys trying to kill Miguel.  The school is rigged by explosives and I’m not really sure how Joe planned to leave because he would have been blown to pieces.  He didn’t think this through….

Pen, making her first smart decision of the season, unscrews a screw and puts on a show, pretending she wants to kill the only other cell mate left.  Joe gets mad because it’s HIS night to KILL people – so that’s not cool.  Eventually, chaos breaks out and the goriest part of Season one occurs when Penelope shoves the screw in Joe’s eye and then he pulls it out.  Gross!

A chase ensues – the one other (non-main) character opens a door and blows into 100 pieces (but opens up a hole in the wall).  Pete gets shot, but survives, Rick gets shot but dies.  Jenna is upset but moves on rather quickly when Pete pats her shoulder and says lets go?  Kind of weird.  Anyway – Joe has Penelope and is about to kill her when Miguel shows up to save her (stop me if you’ve heard this one before).  They fight back and forth but before anything can happen, the siren sounds – ending the Purge for another year.

In probably my favorite part of the whole episode, Joe just flips and switch and is like DAMNIT!  The Purge is over.  I really wanted to kill you guys, but fuck – missed the siren by like 2 minutes.  Welp, I’m a law abiding citizen, so I’ll see you guys next year.  Miguel is a little confused and is like um no thanks buddy and shoots him in the knee and chest and kicks him into a pool while Joe reminds him it’s murder!  Miguel and Pen join Pete and Jenna outside where Miguel tells them Joe is dead.  Pete says I figured…I heard the shots….after the siren! (smooth)  **NOTE** I think Joe is still alive – just saving this for next year when I tell you I told you so.

We fast forward a year and Jenna is overseas with her baby girl watching Purge coverage in France (where they’re probably going to legalize it).  Pen and Miguel show up at Pete’s bar before heading out to “Save People.”  It’s a fitting end, and presumably a fitting beginning for Purge: Season 2.

Did you finish the series? What did you think?  Drop down in the comments and let me know and let’s get ready for more Purging in our future!
